14 - Day Running Camp

Day 1 : Arrival at Eldoret Airport and transfer to Iten

Upon arrival at Eldoret Airport, you will be welcomed at the (small) airport by our team and driver.

Then it’s time to drive to Iten, this is a +-60 minutes drive (depending on traffic). During the drive we get to see part of the city centre of Eldoret (the largest city in the area), you’ll get a good impression of the busy life in this city.

After about an hour’s drive, we arrive at the High Altitude Training Centre in Iten. Here you’ll be welcomed by the rest of our team. Richard, our camp manager will show you your room and give you a tour of the different facilities of the training centre. Information will be shared about the rules/uses in the training centre and some general practical information about Iten. We will also take some time to go over the program of the week and what to expect.

You can join in for an easy afternoon run with the team / group and after that it’s time for the first group dinner at the camp.

Day 2 : Start of the training camp

The first training run in the morning under guidance of our trainer and pacers. Breakfast in the training centre.

After that, we will visit St. Patricks High School. We’ll get a tour at the school and take a look in the School Museum. 

St. Patrick’s High School / Museum is considered the top running school in Iten, this is where legendary Colm O’Connell trains young athletes to become some of the fastest runners in the world.

This is also where Olympic medalists and world-record holders (such as Wilson Kipketer and Ibrahim Hussein) laid some of the groundwork for their running careers. 

When we return to the training centre, we’ll have lunch and afternoon at leisure. Option to go on a second run or hit the gym / pool if you’d like. Dinner at the training centre.

Day 3 : Viewpoint Rift Valley & Kessup Waterfall

We’ll start our day with a training run in the morning under guidance of our trainer and pacers. Breakfast in the training centre.

After breakfast, we’ll visit the view point in Iten to enjoy the beautiful view over the Rift Valley. We will also hike to the nearby Kessup Waterfall.

 Lunch at the training centre and after that, some to relax and we’ll have a Kenyan athlete coming over for a meet and greet / Q&A, it’s a cool way to interact with a Kenyan athlete and a valuable experience for any runner.

Day 4 – 14: Running camp & other activities

We start each day with a guided training session, an non-running activity / excursion and some leisure time. Each

Some of the local excursions on the program:

  • Peek into the local Kenyan athletes camp – get an insider look at the demanding training regimen that top-tier runners go through on their path towards greatness. You’ll get a great perspective about the discipline and preparation of Kenyan athletes, and get to know the humans that put in the work to become record-holding runners.

  • Hike to the Kamariny Track in Iten, the first athletics track in Iten where many world and Olympic champions have trained.

  • Visit the local primary school. Kids in Kenya are friendly, enthusiastic, and they love tourists! Take part in classes along with teachers and students and get a “back to school” experience, without the homework.

  • Go see the giraffes near Iten. Seeing animals at the zoo is fun, but seeing them up close in their natural environment is at least 10 times more awesome. Besides, who doesn’t like giraffes?

  • Run and recharge in Singore forest – A green refuge with tall trees, exquisite wildlife, and fresh air, the Bugar forest is called “Singore” by most runners due to it being very close to the Singore village, which is just outside Iten

  • Visit an athletes home to experience the Kenyan hospitality and get a unique insight into the daily life of a Kenyan athlete.

  • Q&A sessions with professional Kenyan runners – if you have any burning questions and want to expand your running knowledge, there will be Q&A sessions with veteran Kenyan runners you’ll be able to attend throughout the training camp.

  • Visit to the local market in Iten.

  • Farewell dinner in restaurant Iten Club (last night)

  • And more..


Day 14 : Last day in Iten, farewell and departure to Eldoret.

This is the last day in Iten. Depending on your flight schedule, you can join for the last morning run and after breakfast our driver will bring you to the airport in Eldoret for your flight to Nairobi. In case of an late afternoon flight, you can relax at the training centre and still use all of the camps facilities waiting for your transfer (including lunch).

Including a boat safari at Lake Baringo & 2 days of game drive / safari at Lake Nakuru (including overnight stay inside the National Park in a safari lodge).

Day 4 : Lake Baringo Boat Safari

We leave the training centre early (before breakfast) and travel to Lake Baringo (+-3 hour drive). We will take the boat and visit 2 of the islands inside Lake Baringo. Animals to be seen are crocodiles, hippos, giraffes and many different bird species. 

We will also visit the hot springs on one of the islands, the hot springs are one of the few active natural hot springs to be found in Kenya. 

After the Boat Safari, we’ll have lunch in a nearby hotel. After lunch we will have a stop at the ”Snake Farm”, for those who dare.. 

Then it’s time for our return journey to the training centre in Iten.

Day 5 – 11 : Running camp & other activities

Day 11 : Lake Nakuru Safari

We leave the camp in Iten early, after breakfast. (It’s a +- 3 hour drive to Nakuru,) We will have lunch in the Safari Lodge inside the National Park, some free time to relax at the pool and enjoy the views, and have a game drive in the afternoon. Dinner at the Safari Lodge.

Day 12 : Lake Nakuru Safari

Early breakfast at the lodge and game drive through the National Park. The Nakuru National Park has a wide variety of wildlife including rhinos, giraffes, lions, leopards and many other animals. The National Park is famous for the huge population of Flamingos (+1 million at times), and is included in the UNESCO World Heritage list. After the game drive we leave the park for the drive back to the camp in Iten.

Day 13 : Last day of the running camp

We’ll start our day with a training run in the morning under guidance of our trainer and pacers. Breakfast in the training centre.

After breakfast, leisure time.

Lunch at the training centre and after that a non-running activity (from the above list).

Farewell Dinner at the Iten Club, located next to the training centre.

 

Day 14 : Last day in Iten, and departure to Eldoret.

This is the last day in Iten. Depending on your flight schedule, you can join for the last morning run and after breakfast our driver will bring you to the airport in Eldoret for your flight to Nairobi. In case of an late afternoon flight, you can relax at the training centre and still use all of the camps facilities waiting for your transfer (including lunch).
